How to Make up for Picking the Wrong Career Path

Everyone makes mistakes in life, and the possibility of making mistakes is present even while deciding something as important as your career path. Even if you plan every step in the process of getting into a career, you may find that it is not what you wanted at all.

The process of choosing a career path starts right from high school, when your well-meaning parents tell you to opt for a successful career. In college, guidance counselors help you pick out the classes you want for achieving your major. This major, by the way, was decided to be best by a curriculum-based test taken by you in high school over the internet.

After you get the necessary education, you work hard for years to do your job and please everyone, and you slowly move ahead in your career. You did everything that was asked of you, and you did it without complaining. However, despite your hard work and careful planning, you think to yourself more often than you should, “Am I doing what I wanted to do?”

At some point of your life, you would realize that your life and career choices have been made according to someone else’s judgment. Alternatively, you find out that you chose the career because it was the most prestigious, lucrative, or easiest thing to do, and not because you were interested in it. You come to realize that your hard-earned achievements have been for a career you are not truly interested in, and the worst part is that you have no idea what career you actually want either.

Things may seem hopeless, but you need to understand that your predicament is not entirely your fault. Society often requires us to live by certain rules, expectations, and assumptions. With so many things to think about, it is no wonder that we think so little about the most important aspect that decides our career success: ourselves.

In order to understand yourself fully and capitalize on this understanding to choose a career wisely, you need to look at three important aspects: your strengths, personality, and passion.

1. Strengths

You should first look at your strengths and focus on them instead of opting for certain roles you are not good at. Look for projects and tasks that capitalize on your strengths and stick to them.

2. Personality

Everyone has a unique personality, and it plays a huge role in determining your real career path. Your personality is a combination of traits that you cannot change and other traits that you can. A good personality test like the Meyers-Briggs test can give you a clearer picture of your own personality.

3. Passion

When it comes to evaluating someone’s passion, the most common question asked is if there was one thing you would do without getting paid, what role would that be. Unfortunately, this question does not really serve the purpose of finding the right career because you need a good pay to turn your passion into your career. Therefore, you should ask yourself what it is that fetches you the compliments, and that you love doing. The answer to that question can just be what you are looking for.
